Hello My Name Is...
My Educational Philosophy
I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as a educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are three elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment, (1) the teacher acting as a guide, (2) allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and (3) promoting respect for all things and all people.
I grew up in The Netherlands. I graduated from college from The University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and began teaching in 1975 and had my first 10 years of teaching experience at an international school in Amsterdam. In my mid thirties my husband and I left the Netherlands and we worked and traveled in many different countries.
Paul Hover is my husband. He is from Texas and we met in Amsterdam. Together we can speak quite a few foreign languages and these skills gave us the opportunity to travel and work all over the world. We have two children. They both attended Virginia Tech. Collin is our son who is a gaming engineer with a company in San Francisco. Shantal is our daughter who is a global health educator in San Louis Obispo. Twelve years ago we made Blacksburg our home and we love it here.
I have a dog. Her name is Sadie. She is a rescue dog and a mix of a Labrador and a Doberman. She is not only a great pet, but a super watch dog as well!
I like to ride my bicycle, walk and go to the gym where I do body flow and body pump. Also I love to sail and to skate. Growing orchids and making flower bouquets is one of my favorite things to do. I love to read, specially about other countries and cultures.
